Two Spaces After A Period

Space InvadersGreetings friends, my apologies for a long delay in updating my blog but I have shifted hemispheres, from North to South, from Chicago to Sydney. While I miss my family and friends in North America, I am thrilled to be home again in Australia.

I thought I’d jump-start my blog with an article I read yesterday on Slate.com which provides the definitive answer to whether or not you put one or two spaces between sentences. Brilliantly debating both sides of the issue, Farhad Manjoo (technology columnist for the Wall Street Journal) gives us the sole answer: one space only, ever. His rationale for doing so is both compelling and (for this wanna-be graphic designer) fascinating, because it’s not just a story of aesthetics and readability, but of the convergence between old technology (typewriters) and new technology (proportional typesetting.) While you and I may have read similar articles about 1 versus 2 spaces in the past, this article surely ends the debate.

Here’s the article: Space Invaders: Why You Should Never, Ever Use Two Spaces After a Period.

Now, on to more important things, such as the Oxford comma.
