Business Writing

This writing workshop has a single goal, in that immediate clarity is the benchmark of all good business writing. The workshop comprises modular elements which can be chosen to suit the participant’s typical writing assignments within their organisation. For example, participants can learn about the basics of language, grammar and punctuation; active voice and parallel construction; message development and prioritisation; or writing for email. All modules have their own in-class exercise outlined in the workbooks. The workshop can be expanded from a half-day program to a full-day training. (See Workshop Variations, below.)

Suggested Participants

Anyone who wants to create more polished, fluent and compelling documents or emails.

Learning Outcomes

Improve the business writing skills of the workshop participants, specifically to be concise, prioritised and compelling. To do this, the workshop teaches participants to:

  • Follow universal principles of excellent business writing
  • Organise their thoughts more efficiently before and during the writing process
  • Improve their fluency and style
  • Learn how to revise and edit
  • If relevant, reinforce the use of their organisation’s writing style guidelines

Specific Points of Emphasis

  • English language, grammar, punctuation and syntax
  • Word choice
  • Word order and modifiers
  • Active voice
  • Parallel construction
  • Avoidance of cliches, jargon and emotion
  • Positivity
  • Message construction
  • Editing techniques
  • Writing for email

Workshop Variations

The workshop has two variations: half-day and full-day. Half-day workshops focus on the principles of business writing, with participants completing simple writing exercises in their workbooks. All-day training becomes a writing camp, where participants try their hand at a variety of writing assignments on laptops they bring to the workshop. The participants may also bring real-life examples from their role inside the organisation. Following the writing module, partipicants exchange their writing samples, learn to edit and revise, and critique and provide feedback to each other.

Workshop Details

The maximum number of participants is 16.  The minimum is 6. Workbooks are provided as part of the training. Participants would need to bring in either a company or personal laptop.
